The Fine Arts Department at Friendswood High School is a student-centered department whose philosophy focuses on the arts through drama, music, dance, art and speech.

We believe that the fine arts provide students with the opportunities to exhibit self discipline, share in the group experience, develop personal skills that will prepare students to communicate and complete in a world of many diverse communities and cultures by making art.

As a Theatre Department our philosophy is summarized by something we remind our students of: “How you work on stage is how you will work in real life.”

I ask my students to be generous with each other and to trust that they are enough. Although we are quite proud of our products, we teach process as a cooperative effort between students, directors, instructors, parents, community; and, most importantly, self. We train actors to work towards unity and harmony among all the components of theatre.

Being actor centered we encourage students to find their inner beauty and spirits as they work in class and in performance. It is our goal that as they make these discoveries through use of exercises, games and analysis of characters, they will be ready to embrace through dramatic literature and performance the beauty of the human experience.

The FHS Theatre Department teaches Theatre Arts I-V and Technical Theatre I-IV, each providing a progressive in depth study of theatre, acting techniques, and technical-theatre aspects in both full-stage and arena-style theatre.

Kathy Powdrell begins her 33^rd year in FISD.  During that time Kathy Powdrell has worked on 29 Musicals.  Powdrell, as UIL One-Act Play director has 13 appearances at the State Meet and Four UIL One-Act Play State Championships in 1996, 2004, 2007 and 2009.

Powdrell recently was nominated to Direct at the American High School Theatre Festival, at the Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland where Peer Gynt was presented in 2019.

Powdrell was the recipient of 2008 the UIL Sponsor Excellence Award, University of Texas Outstanding Teacher’s Award, the Lillian B. Rhodes Texas Exes outstanding Teacher award, Founders Award for Texas Educational Theatre Association, in 2008 she served as President Elect of TETA.  Powdrell was named FISD Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2017-18.   She and her husband Earle received the Grass Root Finn Buller’s Award Advocates of the Year for United Spinal Association 2018 in the United States Capital.

Kathy Powdrell is a Graduate of The University of Houston with a BS in Science from the College of Education.  Powdrell’s graduate studies in theatre include Lamar University and the University of Texas, Austin. Powdrell completed a Fellowship with the English Speaking Union at London’s Globe Theatre-Teaching Shakespeare through Performance.

In 2018 Powdrell, after 10 previous nominations, won Theatre Under the Stars, Tommy Tune Awards Best Director for The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Kathy Powdrell has mentored and taught throughout the State. This includes:  The University of Texas Summer Theatre Workshop (seven years), Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Camp on the Coast guest director (four years), UIL Super Conferences, Texas State University Summer Theatre program, Texas Thespian Conferences and mentors to Teacher Certification students from The University of Houston and St. Thomas University.  Kathy Powdrell helped create the Houston Shakespeare Conservatory for High School students with Steve Wallace of The Houston Shakespeare Festival.  Kathy Powdrell served as the associate director of The University of Texas Summer Theatre Workshop Conservatory with Dr. Lucien Douglas at the University of Texas, Austin.

Powdrell is perhaps most proud to be a Mustang Parent and Grandparent teaching three of her children and her two granddaughters. Powdrell has been a resident of Friendswood, Texas since 1979 where she and her late husband, Earle Powdrell, raised their four children. The Powdrell's are a Mustang Family where their children were Mascots (three years) Varsity Football, Swim Team, Thespians, UIL One-Act Play, Band, Academic Decathlon, UIL Speech and Debate, Student Council and Girls Nation.

Mason Patterson is a FHS alumni with over 15 years of experience directing, teaching, and producing plays and musicals. During his time at FHS he received numerous UIL One Act Play accolades including Regional All Star Cast and Honorable Mention All Star Cast. He treasured his participation in the traditional FHS musical all four years, which also earned him a Tommy Tune Award his senior year for the role of Hines in The Pajama Game. Graduating in 2012 as Thespian President to Troupe 1084, Mason wished to pursue a career as a theatre educator, and attended the University of Houston School of Theatre and Dance where he had the opportunity of participating in internships with the Alley Theatre, The Rose Theatre (Omaha, NE), and The Houston Shakespeare Festival. Upon graduation from UH he then began his journey in theatre education in Katy Independent School District and had the honor of opening a new theatre department at Stockdick Junior High, which he was soon promoted upward to a high school position at Morton Ranch High School. Mason's thrilled to be returning to his hometown, helping to continue Friendswood ISD's legacy of excellence in education, serving as manager to the new and sophisticated FHS Performing Arts Center, as well as Technical Theatre Director at FHS. He looks forward to the many memories and celebrations to be held at the new PAC, and in a community he will always consider his home.

Theater Arts I is offered to learners who are new to high school theatre and who want to learn basic theatrical skills. This is a survey course with an emphasis on acting and theatre heritage. Theater Arts I learners will study the cultural contribution of theater, its structure, the play, and its performance.

Prerequisite: Theater Arts I and Audition
Theater Arts II is offered to learners who want to further their theatrical skills through work in acting, directing, and theater heritage. Basic principles of production are studied and applied through performances in various theatrical applications. Production work required. Enrollment in the course constitutes agreement to fulfill all curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular requirements.

Prerequisite: Theater Arts I, Theater Arts II and Audition
Theater Arts III learners will continue the study of theater with greater emphasis, on the historical evolution and cultural contributions of Theater, production styles, and performance. Will do advanced work in all phases of theatrical production. This includes advanced study of all visual aesthetics including the physical theatre, scenic design & construction, properties, costumes, lighting, sound engineering and back stage organization. Production work required for UIL Design Contest (not OAP). Enrollment in the course constitutes agreement to fulfill all curricular and extracurricular requirements.

7360 THEATER PRODUCTION I
Grade: 9 – 12
Credit: .5 – 1
Prerequisite: By audition only
This course focuses on all aspects of theatrical production: acting concepts and skills, production concepts and skills, and aesthetic growth through appreciation of theatrical events being involved in the High School musical. Students will share the theater experience by working in the various areas associated with this course by the instructor. NOTE: Once a student is selected for the Theater Production class by audition only, they will receive credit through 80 hours (1/2 unit) to 160 hours (1 unit) of involvement in production activities and theatrical experiences that cover all required TEKS for this course. All work must be completed during the academic year and this is an after school class. (If the student has already obtained their Fine Arts credit prior to participating in the Musical or is taking it simultaneously while in the Musical that student may select the number grade or pass/fail for this class if; the student has completed all the requirements for Theater Production and makes an A in the class. Once the choice has been made and the grade is entered the student may not change this grade per TEA guidelines.)

Theater Production provides practical hands-on experiences in acting and stagecraft through the preparation and public performances of plays. This curricular laboratory for the exploration, development, and synthesis of all elements of theater supplements the other theater courses that concentrate on theories, information, and techniques by providing for the integration and implementation of these ideas and skills. Production work required. Enrollment in the course constitutes agreement to fulfill all curricular and extracurricular requirements.

Thespian Troupe 1084 - ITO Officers - 2023 – 2024

Vice President of Thespian Troupe 1084 - Beau Laviolett (Junior) 
Beau is the Vice President of Troupe 1084. He is honored to be the Vice President and has wanted to serve as an officer since he first joined the department.  He enjoys acting, improv and loves to dance.  He believes this year will take perseverance and is ready to face the challenges head-on with positivity and enthusiasm.

As Vice President, Beau will:

1. Assist the President in a variety of forms. Whether running an errand or being delegated to a large event, the Vice-President should stand by for any action that must be taken. The Vice-President must be active in asking the President what needs to be accomplished. Design organize SHIRTs OFFICERS - (MEMBERSHIP : GEAR SHIRTS / SIGNS)
2. Co-produce all events occurring throughout the year. While the President will usually oversee many large events, it is the duty of the Vice-President to double check and make sure nothing falls out of place for which it has already been organized.
3. Act in the position of the President. If the President is unable to attend a meeting or event, it is the sole responsibility of the Vice-President to seek out information from the president that should be discussed at a meeting.
4. Coordinate and organize annual trip to Texas Thespians with troupe director.
5. Organize and operate the Student Directed SENIOR One-Act Play Night. Make sure all dates are on the calendar, schedule rehearsal space, organizing auditions, assist with advertising, dress rehearsals and final presentations are all within the bounds of presenting for the public. 
6. Acts as business manager for troupe director.
7. Actively involved in ALL Main Stage productions. VIII. Must be enrolled in Theatre Class.

Secretary of Troupe 1084 - McKenna Fritts (Senior)
McKenna Fritts is super excited to be your 2023-2024 Troupe 1084 Secretary! McKenna is also involved in choir where she is the President and cannot what for this years’ performances! She enjoys spending time with her friends and family, especially if it involves Disney. She will mentor underclassmen. Her favorite color green and her favorite movie is Tangled! She cannot wait to meet everybody!  

As Secretary McKenna will:

1. Collaborate with Graphic Design Department to design logos for Thespian Club and production T-shirts, program, posters and lobby marquees.
2. Distributes production posters throughout campus.
3. Hang a monthly calendar on callboard of all upcoming productions, events, meetings, and update call board daily. Make sure points are updated by the scribe and hung on the CALL BOARD/POINT BOARD AT all times.
4. Organize TShirt order form/ Record payments with the treasurer.
5. Actively involved in ALL Main Stage productions.
6. Must be enrolled in Theatre Class.

Treasurer of Thespian Troupe 1084 - Caroline Krebs (Senior)
Caroline is beyond excited for a wonderful year of theatre! She will be serving as the Treasurer of Troupe 1084 and is so grateful to spend her senior year exploring her passion for the arts with such an amazing troupe. This year, Caroline hopes to soak up every moment on and off the stage and make cherished memories that will last a lifetime. Caroline is truly ready to dive headfirst into the magnificent art of theatre this year!

As Treasurer Caroline will:

1. Collaborate with Graphic Design Department to design logos for Thespian Club and production T-shirts, program, posters and lobby marquees.
2. Collect FEES with the SCRIBE/RECORD payments for a) Membership dues to International Thespian and b) Write the receipts for Shirts, Signs, Membership
3. Hang a monthly statements for such fee on the CALL BOARD so the MEMBERSHIP knows what is owed for all upcoming productions, events, meetings, and update callboard.

Historians of Thespian Troupe 1084 - Jimmy Perry (Senior) and Avery Buras
Jimmy Perry is so ready to jump into his senior year! He is excited to be the Historian for Troupe 1084. He wants to capture a year of fun memories and good times through photography and video! Jimmy can’t wait to be a part of a full year of theatre, music, and makeup. He plans to continue the magic of acting after high school in Los Angeles, CA. Jimmy is ready to start a good senior year with the troupe he cherishes most!

Avery Buras is incredibly stoked for her junior year and all the fun that lies ahead! As a histozian, she is proud to serve Troupe 1084 and eager to share her joy of creativity and positivity with fellow Thespians. She’s ambitious for all thing’s theatre, choir, and fashion! Avery is ready to take on any challenge this year, no matter how big or small, and she wants to encourage everyone to treat people with kindness! She can’t wait to make lifelong memories with all of the incredible Thespians surrounding her. Let’s have a groovy year! 

As Historians, Jim and Avery will: 

1. Photograph all thespian club events and productions.
2. Create the thespian club scrapbook and slideshow for presentation at the Thespian Banquet.
3. Oversee creation of the Senior Wall.

Thatcher is elated to be the Scribe for Troupe 1084 this upcoming school year. Thatcher is a returning member of the Friendswood one act play and will be a junior this upcoming year. Thatcher is so excited to fulfill the duties of his office and make this transitional year as enjoyable as he can while celebrating a love for the arts. 

As Troupe Scribe Thatcher will:

1. Actively organize and keep track of all Thespian Membership:
2. Enroll members – print and maintain Membership roster on the Call board.
3. Solicit Points after each activity/production/event. Post points to the Call Board.
4. Keep alphabetical listing : Last Name first
5. Keep an organized file of contact information (alphabetical last name first) and records for all thespian club members including paid dues, and meeting attendance. DUES are to be collected / recorded with help of Treasurer and Secretary

Jason Chaney ’98: Jason graduated from the Culinary Institute of New York this May, and will be interning with at the Ritz Education Program for Chefs in Switzerland.

Katie Clarke (2001) – Cast in the leading role of Clara Johnson in Broadway production of Light in the Piazza in 2005. Katie graduated from Sam Houston State University December 2005 with a BFA in Theatre, just as she debuted on Broadway. Break a leg Katie! We are thrilled for you.

Aaron Cobb ‘00: Aaron is a Theatre Comunications major at the University of Houston.

Colin David 2009: UH Student Improv Troupe Glaundor Wins National Title Team Takes First Place in National College Improv Tournament in Chicago. His University of Houston’s Improvisation Troupe Wins. We are so PROUD of YOU Colin. Proud to say he got his improv start here at FHS in our Improv Troupe/Mustang Follies.Colin has done workshops for the FHS High School Improvisation Troupe and helped with Mustang Follies.

Carrie Devescovi ’99: After attending American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York for a summer course, Carrie has moved to New York to work and study.

Cody Easterbrook ’00: Cody is a sophomore attending BYU-Hawaii as a communications with a journalism emphasis. He hosted a daily pageant at the center and now officially dances polynesian dances. Cody also worked at the Ke Alakai’i, the school newspaper a staff writer (always a reporter) and a runner-up for Homecoming King and served on the Homecoming Court. He was also awarded the student Ambassador scholarship for BYUH. He leave for Cochabamba Bolivia in 2 weeks. Busy boy!

Greg Goff ’99: Greg will be a senior at The University of Oklahoma next year and will be interning in New York for the second year with a production company that stages pre Broadway show for investment producers.

Barrett Goldsmith 2000 is graduating from the University of Houston. He has been working with Rockets.

Kim Griffith ’95 – Graduated Baylor University in ’99 and moved around the country. I am back in the area and work as the Communications Director at Friendswood United Methodist Church. I am a part of a community theatre company, United Players. We are entering our tenth season: this fall (2005) Man of La Mancha, next spring (2006) I will direct The Beams Are Creaking, and summer (2006) Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Stephen Hebert Cyrano in 2000 is graduating from UT and has been accepted to Harvard as a Grad Student in Theology. Wife Natalie Boudreaux 02 will be moving to Boston as well.

Kevin Held 1997 – Graduate of NYU Tisch School for the Arts, Adler Conservatory. Living in California and performing in regional theatre in the LA area.

Wes Hickey ’99: Wes is a senior at Baylor majoring in Pre Med.

Tony Hopkins ’94: Graduated with a Masters from Rice University and is busy climbing the corporate ladder and is still the voice of Mustang Football and a member of the FISD School Board.

Kristen Huff ’94: Kristen graduated from at the University of Texas School of Law in 2001 and sworn by the Texas Bar in May 2002. I am an Assistant Attorney General in the Crime Victims’ Services Division. I will be the Hearing Officer for Crime Victims’ Compensation appeals. I will probably be doing trainings around the state in a couple of months as well.

Jonathan Jones ’00: Jonathan has completed his tour with the Navy.

Julia Jones 2001: Theatre major at NYU Tisch School. Acting major involved in many on and off campus projects in NY off Broadway.

Lori King ’00: Currently living in Des Plaines, IL. after a year and a half in Chicago on a couple of improvisational comedy teams that performed around town. Writing — a poem of mine has been published in a book of poetry, as well as many articles published in newspapers (editorials and my own column at UH). Richie Ramsey asand I co-founded a sketch comedy team called “Chompin’ at the Bit” at UH where we collaborated on writing the sketches. Some of my artwork is hanging in the lobby of Gilda’s Club Chicago. Right now I am working on a book about living with manic depression and I have also just written a country song. Now I am learning to play the guitar to write the music for it. I am working part-time as a nanny, living with my boyfriend of one and a half years and basically just enjoying life.

Danny Kirkwood ’00: After attending The University of Houston Moores School of Music as a Vocal Performance Major, Danny transfered to Texas A&M as a Bio Med Major. In the Fall of 2002 he will attend Boston Music Conservatory on a scholarship.

Ryan Kistenmacher ’04: is a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in business administration. He was recently elected the vice-president of his residence hall and is involved with many on-campus groups, including the Freshman Interest Groups, Texas Exes Student Chapter, Business Professionals of America, and he will soon begin giving campus tours for the Office of Admissions.

Andrew Love ’00: Andrew finished his second year at McClennan College in Waco and will be attending the University of Houston as a Theatre Major, next fall.

Jenny Martin ’95: I graduated from Texas A&M in 1999 with a Bachelor of Environmental Design. I’ve been working as an intern architect at a Houston firm for the past six years. Only a few more exams to go, and I will be a
licensed Architect. I married a wonderful guy (also an Aggie) and we live in Pearland. We have a 10 month old son named Blake who is our pride and joy!

Joel Middents ’97: Joel is working with the Houston Grand Opera in administrative Computer operations.

Shauna McLean ’98: Shauna graduate in Theatre from TCU.

Ben Mobray ’00: Just finished a Comedy tour in England, with surprising results. He is now touring the US and working in Houston Comedy Clubs. Ben was awarded “Houston’s Funniest Comic” and is going to the National Competition to win a spot on an HBO special. We are proud of you, Ben!

Lindsay Powdrell ’01: Lindsay RECENTLY GRADUATED CUM LADE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON HONORS COLLEGE. SHE HAS DEFERRED ADMISSION TO REGENT LAW AT REGENT UNIVERSITY IN VIRGINIA AND ANXIOUSLY AWAITING TO HERE FROM U OF H LAW. AFTER BEING CO CAPTAIN OF THE U OF H SPEECH AND DEBATE SQUAD SHE WILL HELP COACH THEM THIS YEAR AS SHE TAKES POST GRAD CLASSES IN POLITICAL SCIENCE…UNLESS, UH LAW CALLS.

Powdy Powdrell ’00: Powdy WILL GRADUATE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON CLEAR LAKE IN DECEMBER O5 WITH A DEGREE IN PHYSICAL CONDITIONING. HE PLANS TO ATTEND UTMB IN AUGUST 06 TO PERSUE HIS MASTERS IN PHYSICAL THERAPY.

Nathan Raley ’94: Nathan is currently teaching at Houston Baptist University. I want to invite you to come out and see the show that I’ve been working on for the last couple of months at the Country Playhouse. I first saw The Elephant Man at the A.D. Players Theatre when I was in high school in Friendswood, and it really struck me. I got the script and did a 10-minute cutting of the play for dramatic interpretation at speech tournaments and ended up taking the piece to nationals. Now, more than 10 years later, I get the opportunity to be in the play “for real,” and it is a great privilege. This play won the Tony award for best play in 1979 and is based pretty closely, as best I can tell, on the actual accounts, photos, and hospital documents surrounding the case of John Merrick, the contemporary of Jack the Ripper who managed to find meaning, dignity, and even humor in life despite horrific deformities and health problems. He went from being an abused freak-show commodity to being a friend of the crème-de-la-crème of English society. Merrick is of course really interesting, but the doctor who has compassion on him is an equally fascinating character. I won’t say much else about the show now, but I think you’ll enjoy it and find plenty to think about and discuss in this clever, moving, and sometimes humorous play. I’m playing Merrick, and my friend Will Burgin, theatre director at the school where I teach, is the lighting designer. The play opens this weekend and runs for three more weekends after that. It is about an hour and a half long, without an intermission. I’m including a mini version of the poster which you can look at for details, and below is the website, in case you want to buy tickets online. The last show is on Saturday night, April 2. I really hope you can come!!!

Richie Ramsey ’95: and his wife are expecting. Richie is now the Broadcast Journalism teacher at FHS.

Matt Rickard ’05: Freshman at the University of Cincinnatti Conservatory of Music and Theatre. Recently cast as a SUPER Numerary (yes Mark and Rachel a Super Numerary) in a professional Opera Company’s Opera. Loving the Anne Bogart acting training.

Libby Revis ’98: I received my Bachelor of Social Work degree from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2002 and my Master of Social Work degree from UH in 2003. I am currently working at Harris County Social Services.

Shelley Taylor 2000 just graduated from TCU with a BBA in Business Management, double minor in French/ Speech Communication.

Matt Timme 2001: Theatre Major at Webster University. Recently cast in the Saint Louis Reperatory Theatre’s “Pirrendello’s Henry IV”. Currently a senior at Webster University where he is very active in their program.

Christen Vincent ’99: Currently attending the University of Houston as a Theatre Major.

Cameron Waldner ’00: Camerion is majoring in Theatre Communications at The University of Houston.

Wendy Ward-Valichek ’96: Wendy is attending Baylor Medical School with her husband, Ryan.

Michael Wallace – ’80. Acted in virtually all productions during my 2 years at FHS (78-79 and 79-80), including fall productions, musicals, One Act Play, and UIL speech tournaments under the directorship of Bennie Nipper. Spent 20 years in the US Navy in the Nuclear Power program. During navy years, acted in some local plays, including one put on by the chaplain department on the USS Abraham Lincoln while underway on deployment. Retired from Navy life in 2006. Currently working for Siemens in Orlando as a Technical Training Specialist, traveling the world to teach systems and operations of gas turbine power generating equipment.

Matt Youngblood ’97: I currently live in Southern California with my wife. I graduate from The University of North Texas in ’01. (took me a while to find myself) I am attempting to get my MBA from Cal State and working in a small bank in the Major Loan Division. I gave up acting shortly after High School, however, recently I have been looking into doing some community theater. married last summer to an amazing person. I finally found someone to put up with me.

John Zendt (2004) – Attending the United States Naval Academy with intent in majoring in Military History/Politcal Science and being commissioned as a Marine Corps Officer. Participating in Navy Varsity Cheerleading. Was part of the 2004 UIL One Act Play State Championship production of Rozencrantz and Guilderstern Are Dead. Misses Pod…Pod misses him.
