WHAT IS A VOTER-APPROVAL TAX RATE ELECTION?

State law requires that school districts seek voter approval to raise their maintenance and operations tax rate above a prescribed amount. The election is referred to as a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE).

HOW DOES THE DISTRICT BENEFIT FROM THIS ELECTION?

Passage of the VATRE will result in a nearly $1.2 million increase in funding for the District, while decreasing the total tax rate by .1294 cents.  The District uses these funds for teacher and staff salaries, books and classroom supplies, utilities, educational resources, custodial, insurance and other items that help educate students each day.

WHY CALL A VATRE?

There are several primary reasons Friendswood ISD has called for a VATRE:

  • Generating additional funds to be used for:
    • Teaching and staff salaries (83.7% of budget goes towards payroll)
    • Safety costs
    • Classroom supplies
    • Utilities
    • Educational resources
    • Insurance
    • Other items that help educate students each day

TAX IMPACT

Passage of Prop A by the voters in November 2023 will decrease the total tax rate by $0.1294 cents. Homeowners will see an average decrease of $693.66 in their tax bill.* Approval of this tax rate will maximize school district funding by nearly $1.2 million.
