FHS Academic Decathlon Team Takes the State Title

FHS Academic Decathlon Team Takes the State Title
FHS Academic Decathlon State Champions 2023

On the weekend of Feb. 25, the Friendswood High School Academic Decathlon (AD) team earned first place in the AD State Competition, held in San Antonio. This is the first time since 2014 that the Mustangs have brought home the championship title.

The two-day competition included the following categories: Art, Economics, Speech, Interview, Essay, Literature, Math, Music, Science and Social Science. All team members are required to participate in all 10 categories.

In addition to the State title, the team went home with 37 individual medals, first place in the Super Quiz Competition and $18,550 in scholarship funds collectively.

AD coaches Elizabeth Woodley and Adam Brown shared their excitement for their students’ success.

“These kids are amazing,” Woodley said. “They really came together as a team in the end, not just winning the State Title but truly working together, helping each other and becoming friends. That is one of the best parts about this program: watching these kids grow as students, as young people in general and as a team. By the end of State, we are like a family. I am honored to be a part of this program and work with dedicated coaches.”

Brown agreed.

“I am deeply gratified by this team's wonderful achievement because it represents months of grueling discipline and teamwork,” Brown said. “These students have demonstrated what real commitment looks like and the rewards it can bring. I am also grateful for the early mornings, late nights, patience, endurance and passion of the coaches and volunteers who helped our students prepare. This achievement represents a community effort, and I hope the community celebrates it as much as we do.”

The team includes Evan Yang, Ethan Yang, Daniel Chen, Brodie Lynch, Kynlee Landrum, Jude Peters, Kyle Clauson, Rylan Lynch and Wyatt Chambers. Other coaches are Ray Monahan and Barrett Stephens.
