Friendswood ISD Transition Center allows students 18-21 who have completed their high school requirements to experience activities in the community after graduation. This center allows students to transition between student life and real-world experiences while maintaining a comfortable learning environment supported by the district.

The Center offers the following services to its students: life skills, community service involvement, counseling-evaluations, a secure environment, and safety lessons all with the assistance of trained staff.

Texas Transition and Employment Guide:

The Transition and Employment Guide is for you, the student in Texas public schools, who may have received special education services due to a disability. It also provides helpful information for your parents. This guide has steps you and your parents can take to make sure you are able to find the right work or educational options for you after high school.

It also tells you where to get the services you will need after high school. Each section has phone numbers, emails, and websites to help you find what you need.

At the end of each section and at the end of the guide, you will find a timeline of steps that you and your parents can take as you make the transition from student to adult.

If you have questions about this guide or the information in it, please send the Texas Education Agency an email at sped@tea.state.tx.us.

The online Transition and Employment Guide is located on the Transition in Texas website from Region 11. To use the guide, go to this link: Transition in Texas

Repurposing a building in a school district can save much money, use available areas and solve a problem at the same time. In Friendswood ISD a unique building has been transformed into the new innovative Vocational and Daily Living Skills Transition Center for Special Education students.

The building is known as the former Friendswood Junior High “round building.” Built in 1965 by the architect firm, Rustay, Martin and Vale, the building was a new concept for an elementary school with all classrooms circling around the main area which was the library. Architects and interested design individuals from across the nation made special trips to see the new building concept. It was Friendswood Elementary in the beginning and ended up part of the Friendswood Junior High complex in later years. Now it has stood empty for three years. Once again its special shape will enhance the project for the center.

The new center has two separate pre-vocational skills labs, a fully functional residential-style kitchen with handicap accessibility, living room, bedroom, and laundry room for training in personal housekeeping and daily living skills, an exercise/adaptive PE room/gym, and additional space for training of needed skills. Available at the center, is an outdoor container garden for gardening skills and a fully equipped print shop ready for printing, shredding and book binding. The students at the Transition Center received a grant for supplies to make Spirit Shirts to sell to school clubs. Special Education students from the JH and FHS also utilize the Transition Center to learn various skills.
